![]() ![]() To increase the contact pressure between the ring and the liner surface, the rings can have chamfered edges on either the outer sides of the lands or facing the combustion chamber to reduce the oil consumption through improved oil scraping from the bore. Oil rings can be one-piece or two pieces. In the oil ring, holes or slots are cut into the radial centre of the ring which allows the excess oil to flow back to the reservoir. Related Read: Intelligent Cylinder Lubrication for Modern Marine Engines These rings do not allow the oil to pass from the space between the face of the ring and the cylinder. These rings are also called scraper rings as they scrap the oil off the cylinder walls and send back to the crankcase. The oil is splashed onto the cylinder walls. These rings are also used to spread the oil evenly around the circumference of the liner. The oil control rings control the amount of lubricating oil passing up or down the cylinder walls. This is caused by the wiper ring wiping excess oil toward the combustion chamber. If the wiper ring incorrectly installed with the tapered angle closest to the compression ring, it results in excessive oil consumption. Related Read: How Internal Forces in Marine Engines Affect Their Operation? Most of the wiper rings have a taper angle face which is positioned toward the bottom to provide a wiping action as the piston moves toward the crankshaft. Their main function is to clean the liner surface off the excess oil and to act as support back up ring on stopping any gas leakage further down which escaped the top compression ring. The wiper ring also called a Napier ring, or backup compression ring, are installed below the compression ring. Moreover, it also provides help to the top compression ring in sealing and heat transfer. The oil is controlled by shearing the layer of the oil left by oil ring, thus providing the top compression rings enough lubrication. The primary function of these rings is to seal the combustion gases and transfer heat from the piston to the piston walls. However, this may differ according to the design of the engine. The compression rings are located in the first grooves of the piston. The compression rings provide sealing above the piston and prevent the gas leakage from the combustion side. Things to be Checked During Inspection of Piston Ring.In this article, we will have a look at the different types of piston rings used in marine engines. oil scraper ring is used in 4 stroke engine as it’s a trunk type engine, and the crankcase oil has direct access to cylinder liner and piston. However, in smaller marine engines, different types of piston rings are used for dedicated purposes. Related Read: Reasons for Cylinder Liner Wear and Ways to Measure it In 2-stroke large engines, compression type piston rings are used to seal the combustion chamber and wiper rings are installed below them to wipe the deposits from the liner and distribute oil on the liner surface. The piston ring is an essential piston part, and its numbers and functionality differ depending on the type and capacity of the engine. Marine engines have three or more types of rings fitted on the circumference of the piston. The primary usage of the piston ring is to seal the chamber (where the piston is moving), which can be a combustion chamber of a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke engine. Piston rings are manufactured and classified on the basis of function and usability. ![]() ![]() ![]() Why this is only somewhat flexible is that once the sensor is clipped onto the bracket it cannot be rotated in any direction. It also allows for easy removal when it comes time to replace the batteries. This arrangement is very secure and there is no risk of the sensor coming loose. Once the bracket is in place, the sensor simply clips onto the top lip, and is then secured with a single screw on the bottom. In both cases there are four screw holes in the corners to secure it. Rotating the corner mount 90 degrees allows it to be placed on the outside of a corner as well. As it only requires a single screw in the center it can be attached to a curved post just as easily, not just a flat surface.Ī corner mount is also provided that can be placed into a 90 degree corner, and the mounting plate then attached to the outward flat side. Using the provided mounting plate, you can attach it to a vertical surface such as a wall or post. The motion sensor claims flexible placement as a selling point, and this is somewhat true. In the box is just the sensor, a secure mounting plate that’s slots into the back, a quick start guide, and a wedge-shaped bracket that allows for mounting In corner situations, both inside or outside a corner. What this means is that while the Hue Outdoor Motion has specific functionality for controlling Hue lights, you may also be able to use it to control your other smart devices, and lights from other brands, through a compatible smart home platform. Some of those platforms are able to use connected sensors to drive their own automation behaviors, and those that do will be able to see and use the sensor input from this motion sensor. The Hue Bridge itself offers integration with an extensive list of third party systems, including Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Logitech Harmony, and more. The Hue system can’t actually use it at all, it doesn’t even appear in the Hue app, and it seems to only be available to Apple’s HomeKit. The latter is used for providing better control of the lighting behavior, but the temperature sensor is a bit odd. Included in the Outdoor Motion sensor, like it’s indoor sibling, are additional sensors for temperature and ambient light. Naturally it’s also weather proof for outdoor use and can be mounted in a variety of configurations with the included bracket hardware. ![]() The sensor allows the Hue bridge to turn on any connected Hue lights when motion is detected, and turn them off automatically after a set period of no motion.īeing ZigBee powered, the motion sensor is completely wireless, and powered only by a two AA batteries. The Hue Outdoor Motion sensor is simply a passive infra-red sensor (PIR) that connects to the Hue Bridge (which is required) via the ZigBee protocol. A common source of one-star reviews for wireless products is that they don’t work, but this is almost always because the placement of the device does not give adequate signal strength. ![]() Both sensitivity and flexibility of placement are important here.įinally, buying any wireless device, you’ll need to consider range and interference to ensure optimal performance. You’ll also want to consider placement and if the motion sensor you are looking to get will trigger when you don’t want it to, such as due to passing traffic or other activity outside your property. While the Hue sensor can be seen and used by other connected platforms, it actually works best when driving Hue lights through the Hue bridge itself as it offers some more advanced functionality this way. When looking for an outdoor motion sensor you’ll want to think about what devices you want to control, and therefore what integration you need. It can also appear as a usable sensor in some of the various smart home platforms with which the Hue system integrates. Hue has come to the party with the Hue Outdoor Motion sensor which is both fast, and configurable. It is here that I wanted something that could reliably manage my outdoor entertaining area without having to install another switch. Getting the lights to turn on automatically outside is something that offers both convenience and security benefits, especially if the light switches are on the inside of the house. Philip’s Hue system is a fully integrated lighting solution, so it naturally includes motion sensors specifically for this purpose. The key requirement is that the motion sensors are capable enough to give you control over how the lights work, and responsive enough to not leave you standing in the dark for a few seconds. With smart lighting, it’s fairly easy to get a fully automated and efficient lighting solution with motion sensors. While the unfolding legs would be impossible to recreate mechanically, the legs and gun-pods could be tweaked a bit so that they really work. Another geometric oversight was the range of motion of the wings and guns - to swivel and cover a large portion of the playing area they actually pass through the legs. The in-game animation is too fast to actually understand how the designers intend the legs to work, but it makes enough sense for something that isn't very critical to the story or gameplay. It is fairly obvious that the kneecaps were intended to fill in that gap in the body, but this scene shows that the legs were actually intended to coil and telescope out from the body - something that could never be done in real geometry. In Portal 2 the player makes their way through a factory that builds Turrets, so we get to see a better vision of what the original designer intended. The Turrets are basically an Apple-styled lozenge made from glossy white plastic that breaks open into various moving components. The Turrets are meant to be deadly, but also delicate - hence the spindly legs which are reminiscent of the Striders and Head-crabs from Half-Life, an earlier Valve game. While the Portal games were created using the same CGI as the modern Transformers movies, the creators wanted to make a world that emphasized realistic physics, as that is the core mechanic of the game. These robots look more like a magical swirling cloud of spikes than anything hinged or mechanical. A bad example, on the other hand, is the modern Transformers reboot, where the aesthetic was driven by complex rendering software that is good at pumping out polygons. This meant that Hasbro could make working toys fairly easily - sticking to realistic toy mechanisms drove the aesthetic of the cartoon. A good example is the 1980's Transformers toy line - the transformation from vehicle to robot made sense even if the range of motion of the anthropomorphized robots were fudged to make them more human like. In videogames and movies, almost nothing is designed by an engineer and if a mechanism seems to make sense to the casual observer it's good enough. ![]() When I began thinking about the Portal Turret I knew it wouldn't be a simple conversion from a 3d object created using surface or NURBS space to solid or Parametric space. Citizen Snips, who started his Turret around the same time as I did, but managed to finish his in a more reasonable amount of time. I'd like to acknowledge some other builders who inspired me to this huge project: I'd guess that it weighs around 20 pounds, but it's such an odd shape that it's impossible to lift in one piece - the front legs tend to fall out. The entire model is about 48" tall at the top of the egg, with another 10" of antenna above that. This project took me a good 200 hours in my spare time after work over the course of several months and several hundred dollars worth of materials. The Turret proved to be a special challenge since it's so spindly and transforms in ways that leave no room for internal mechanisms. I had access to some behind the scenes assets, but they weren't nearly as helpful as you'd think - carefully examining screen-captures is best. When I made this my company, ThinkGeek, was working with Valve to develop a number of licensed products and toys related to the two Portal videogames, so I was already taking a close look at how to recreate these virtual objects in the real world, just not at such an ambitious scale. It turned into a far more involved project than I expected, so be warned: this project is not for the faint of heart. This instructable is a walk-through of how I made my life-sized Turret from the videogame Portal. ![]() ![]() Prioritize upgrading the Fool’s Lament above all and then return for the others if you’re a completionist.
